Project: RTI Phase 3: Receiving and Storage Systems

The final phase of this client's rehabilitation of their RTI terminal involved the rework of the terminal's receiving system and an increase in the storage capacity.
The receiving system suffered from a throttled, asymmetric feeder arrangement that prevented the transport system from consistently achieving its full capacity. Furthermore, an unfortunately placed bend in the transport conveyor created an undesirable spillage problem which further reduced the maximum transport rate.
CMC designed a revised transport system which realigned the existing transport system and introduced an en-masse conveyor between this belt conveyor and the receiving hopper. This new conveyor assured a symmetrical unloading of the receiving hopper and a cleaner loading of the main transport conveyor. Although the escrow capacity of the receiving hopper was reduced, the efficiency of the new receiving system allowed the overall receiving thoughput to be increased.
The final improvement to the receiving system called for the construction of drip sheds upstream and downstream of the existing receiving pit to eliminate the ingress of water into the transport system.
In order to take advantage of changing market conditions, the plant needed to be able to handle shipping lot sizes of up to 30 000 tonnes of product. The existing land arrangement was not ideally suited to this type of expansion and the final design concept involved the addition of a dog-leg storage lineup which more than tripled the storage capacity to 35 000 tonnes.
