Bulk Materials Handling

Vancouver Wharves Limited (Kinder Morgan) -- North Vancouver, BC

Engineering Specialists with Business Minds

CMC's heritage is rich with business-focused engineering experience in bulk materials handling. All of the principals who came together to form CMC in 1990 were senior engineers with many years of industrial bulk materials handling experience in the grain and mining sectors. This collective experience also includes major port terminal reconfiguration projects that have inspired our clients to re-tool and take on exciting new challenges in their own marketplace.

Feature Project: Berth 4/5 Redevelopment

Client: Vancouver Wharves Ltd. (now Kinder Morgan)

Location: North Vancouver, BC, Canada

Vancouver Wharves Limited (Kinder Morgan) -- North Vancouver, BCCMC Engineering and Management Ltd.’s initial consulting assignment was to research new business opportunities for Vancouver Wharves Ltd.’s bulk cargo rail receiving and ship loading facility.

CMC provided marketing as well as operational and capital investment input for Vancouver Wharves long-term planning process. This process inspired Vancouver Wharves Ltd. to invest in the efficiency enhancement of the existing bulk cargo business, and to invest in the specialized material handling facility required for the agribusiness and specialty crop ship loading market.

Project Goals

Vancouver Wharves Ltd. later selected CMC to restructure and expand their operation to accommodate simultaneous handling of two 115 car unit trains, as well as the design for a new agri-product bulk rail receiving, storage and ship loading facility.

Products to be handled by the new facility included:

  • Sulphur and other bulk chemicals,
  • Ore concentrates,
  • Agri-products, including alfalfa cubes, malt, peas and beans, and other grains.

Project Achievements

Meeting this project’s objectives for reducing product handling costs required innovative design solutions to the rail yard design. Unique Spiral loop tracks (link to photo?) were designed to provide track length that could continuously and simultaneously unload up to two 115 car unit trains in a very limited area.

Integrated Services Provided by CMC:

  • Conceptual design for restructuring rail handling for Berths 1 to 5
  • Project management and preliminary engineering of infrastructures for Berths 1 to 5
  • Preliminary and detailed engineering for new specialty grain handling facility
  • Preliminary and detailed engineering of loop track and infrastructures for Berth 4 and 5
